You drive 43 miles north on I 95 to Exit 169. Park in Metro parking on weekdays for $4.50 for the entire day, weekend parking is free. After 9:30 a.m. on weekdays, or all day on weekends, you can purchase an all day ticket for $7.80 per person. This ticket gives you unlimited use of the Metro for the entire day. The Metro operates until midnight.
Within walking distance of the National Mall, Smithsonians, the Capitol Building and most points of interest. Some things will require several blocks of walking.

This train is available Monday thru Friday from the Fredericksburg train station, which is about a 10 mile drive. The last train leaves for D.C. at 7:50 a.m. You will arrive D.C. at 9:18 a.m. Trains return to Fredericksburg a variety of times until 8:08 pm. The VRE cost $20.60 per person round trip, or seniors and kids 7-21 $10.30. Free parking is available.
They are both basically the same. They are transportation around D.C., stopping at most monuments, museums and points of interest, and includes narration.
From Union Station. Both the VRE and Metro take you there. There are also other places to pick up these systems.
We always recommend the Metro. Arlington Cemetary has pay parking about $15.00 per day. Free parking is very hard to find and not recommended.

Yes, but a few streets downtown are narrow. You can park and walk or ride a Trolley Tour from the visitor center.
